On the north of Uruguay, this area is tho only one which has borders with Argentina and Brazil. Its located in a basaltic region with plenty of amethysts and agates, semi-precious stones, part of which are handcrafted in Artigas being one of the main exportations of the area.

The historic inheritance of this land is marked by important places in the history of this country.


Cultural Tourism in Artigas


The Concordia bridge, as a como un nexus with Brasil, the squares of Artigas city, the parks of Bella Unión, and the Monument to the Battle of Masoller, are part of the Cultural Tourism of this state capital.





On the northern extreme of the country, and in the River mouth of Cuareim River towards the Uruguay River, you can find Bella Unión, where great part of its cultural activity originates in the Culture House, dependant of the Local Council. It has an auditorium for theatre representations, events and a library. There are workshops for theatre, music, ceramic, handcrafts and paintings.



Places of interest:


Concordia (Concord) bridge:

Built in 1968, this 750 metres bridge, connect Artigas and Quaraí (Brazil) cities.




City Market:

Declared Historic Nacional Monument, its located in the corner of Bernabé Rivera st. and Gral. Garzón st.

Its original arquitecture remains with some modern elements. Handcrafts are present in this particular builiding, thanks to an agreement between the city council and the European Union.


San Eugenio church: 

Located in Gral. Eugenio Garzón street (see map), on this place it was built the first temple of the area. Nowadays there is a museum, the Eclesiastic Padre Anselmo Espada Museum.


Monument to the Battle of Masoller:

In Masoller city (see map), its a corner between the Rivera, Artigas and Salto departments (states).  The battle was held on the 1st of septiember, 1904, where the gobernment held by President José Batlle y Ordoñez overthrow “white” troops comanded by Gral. Aparicio Saravia, where he was fatally wounded.




Parks and green areas



7th of Setember stroll

Located on the Cuareim river coast, limit with Brazil, in the central Artigas city area. Beatiful place for enjoying nature, with camping facilities. Inside this open space its the Rodó Park, with its artificial lake, Mountain Bike circuit, restaurant and bar.


Ibirapitá tree

Brought from Paraguay in 1915 by Baltasar Brum, its a direct descendant of the one Gral. Artigas had on his exile in Paraguay. Its in the city of Artigas, next to the train station.


Piedra Pintada (Painted Stone)

Located in the “Congreso de Abril” Park  with camping, barbecues, bar, pool and bathrooms.

Its name comes from its green-red colour, being quite strange for its size and isolated location.




In this place you can also find the Fauna and Flora Ecologic Reserve, and the Wagons Museum.


General José Gervasio Artigas Square

Located in the center of the city. There is a equestrian monument to José Gervasio Artigas on the top of  6420 amethysts stones.


José Batlle y Ordóñez Square

It is the biggest city square in the country, located in the center of the city.

Theres an obelisk in its center, in honour to the independence heroes of 1825. Built with 120 tons of granite transported by train in 1928. Each side of the obelisk has elements in bronze for the national coat of arms.


Rivera Park

In Bella Unión (see map), in the middle of the urban zone and on the shore of Uruguay river, its a place of camping with barbecues, bar and a sports area.






Museo Departamental

Located in Artigas city, in the former train station and in front of Andresito square .

Incluides nacional and local historic pieces. There is also a zoological local pieces proccessed by taxidermia and a complete mineral exhibition. There are also fosile and indian pieces.

Timetable is from 8 to 12 hs. and 13 to 17 hs.



Events in Artigas




Held in february, Artigas Carnival is one of the main cultural manifestations of the state.


Tourists from all the country and abroad enjoy every year this celebration, which has become an atraction for people of the three countries (Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil).




Ecotourism in Artigas



There are several natural camping sites and parks in differentes places of Artigas, public or private ones. But one of its main attractives are the semi-precious stone facilities, a very original activity.




Cantera La Limeña

Three kilometers in direction to the town La Bolsa you can find La Limeña, an open area of extraction for amethysts and agates. Thre is a proper infrastructure for visitors to see de extraction of the stones and a classified collection.



Canteras de Enzo Berardi y Andrés Jacketti

Following the same road, passsing the town of La Bolsa for 16 kms. you can find the Enzo Berardi and Andrés Jacketti mines, extracting the minerals using machinery and explosives.

In the walls of the tunnels you can see the beautiful geodes of amethysts, agates and quartz.




Beach and Sun in Artigas


You can enjoy sun and beaches in the Municipal Seaside Resort of Artigas, in the Los Pinos Seaside in Bella Unión, or strolling by the Cuareim river.
